Git Merge • The Future of Pro Git (Scott Chacon)
Git is an open source distributed version control system created in by Linus Torvalds and others from the Linux development community. Version control is a system that keeps track of changes to a file or group of files over time. When you have a history of these changes, it lets you find specific versions later, compare changes between versions, recover files you may have deleted, or revert files to previous versions.
Pro Git, Second Edition
Average rating 4. It teaches you git assuming you have passing knowledge about VCSs - and does a pretty great job teaching the basics - but leaves a lot of open questions about intermediate topics, like branching strategies and each of their benefits and drawbacks. That means that they provide a turnkey solution to host Git repositories on their servers. I especially liked cjacon perspectives on 'how to be a good contributor to a open writtten project' and 'how to be a good manager of an open source project'.

Welcome to the second edition of Pro Git. The first edition was published over four years ago now. Since then a lot has changed and yet many important things have not. While most of the core commands and concepts are still valid today as the Git core team is pretty fantastic at keeping things backward compatible, there have been some significant additions and changes in the community surrounding Git.
It contains the basics and also a variety of advanced topics which I did end up scort through but I know where to go back to if I need to. I've been trying to leverage its powers ever. Paperbackpages. This book is not for that purpose In other places the user is walked through cloning a project from git and manually installing it -- even though apt-get is used to install other things on sometimes the same page!
