The natural supply of essential plant nutrients by a fertile soil is a complex process well demonstrated by the exacting requirements of hydroponics. How soil profiles of value in agriculture—as well as mediocre ones—arise from parent rocks is treated under the headings: weathering, translocation and the organic cycle, special reference being made to the formation of clay minerals with characteristic structures and properties. Each dominates the best-drained sites of extensive areas, but each is associated locally with a complete catena controlled by ground-water relationships. In addition, Brown Forest soils occupy the best-drained sites on some highly calcareous materials, and Alluvial soils occur on recent alluvium.

Four soil profiles Yala, Galana, Baringo and Bondo that represent different ecology, physiography and pedological variability were described to study their morphology, soil physico-chemical characteristics and to classify them using two internationally known soil classification systems. Soil samples were taken from designated pedogenic horizons for physical and chemical analysis in the laboratory. In Bondo, the soils are moderately acid pH 5. The soils have low to moderate fertility. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦
