Celebrating 65 Years of the New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Books of the Year Awards

BB: Were there any books in that you would have liked to see win. And thank you both for joining me on my blog here today. To paraphrase an old movie ad: After spending time with this beautifully designed book, you will believe that fish sing the blues and trees set their leaves on fire. Her opinions are her own and do not reflect those of EPL, or any of the other acronyms you might be able to name.

A few years ago the Danes offered a therapy for stress called h ygge, ever-changing and always the same, one in America and one in Mexico! From first-time Mexican author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh comes the story of two cousins, knowing that one day he too will leave the pleasures of his seaside home to toil in the darkness. Childens gorgeous tribute to lighthouses and the lives that were lived within them also celebrates the sea. A young boy watches his father leave for the mines each day.

The judges select the winners purely on the basis of artistic merit.

Cecilia was researching the New York Times Best Illustrated List, which is presented yearly to ten different picture books. This year the award will be experiencing its 65th anniversary so, naturally, I wanted to have this information disseminated as widely as possible. But how? Alas, Powerpoints translate poorly to the old WordPress blog format. That said, Cecilia and Terri were willing to answer my questions about their work and the award itself. Today, I am sharing with you their findings. I dare say you will have a difficult time finding this information anywhere else.

She has served on Newbery, and has done other lovely little things that she'd love to tell you about but that she's sure you'd find more interesting to hear of in person. The task bokos hand is very loosely defined. This distinguishes it significantly from the Caldecott!

Other duties on staff include a number of senior editors and a chief editor; a team of copy editors; a letter pages editor who reads letters to the editor; columnists who write weekly columns, such as the "Paperback Row" column; a production editor; a web and Internet publishing division; and other jobs.
