The McIntosh variety is sweet and juicy, and breaks down when baked. Golden Delicious apples are more tart; they'll soften a bit in the oven, but will maintain their shape. Both are readily available, but Macouns are a good substitute for the McIntosh, and Honey Crisp can be used in place of the Golden Delicious.

How to make Apple Cobbler

I just made this and I thought it turned out well. I made a couple slight modifications. I used 4 Granny Smith and two Braeburn apples to give it more variety in the apple flavors.

This dessert looks like a cobbler or pie, but it has the texture of a cake. Top it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Thought the cake texture would be a nice touch, but a regular old cobbler crust, or just a proper biscuit- would have been the better way to go. Too eggy and tough. I think this recipe is delicious as is. It might be even better with just a few more apples added to it. This was okay, nothing special.

It seemed to overpower the apples and cranberries. The kids loved it. Cookbook author and baking ccobbler Abby Dodge created this recipe exclusively for Epicurious. It worked out great and everyone asked for the recipe afterward.

I couldn't recommend it more. Make your own vanilla bean ice cream. But that is totally preference. Give a try - maybe you will have better luck than me.

    I needed something for epicurioous last-minute dinner guests and had to use what I had on hand. Nutritional Info. The biscuits recipe rules!. I was in a hurry so I sliced them a little unevenly.
