Edited by Stephen Jones. I always have a feeling of trepidation when I buy a book like this. The punkish lesbian detective Kitty Donnelly makes for an engaging narrator, and while the end was a trifle limp, for the most part this tale of possessed old records was a blast! In Miri by Steve Rasnic Tem the protagonist is still haunted by what can best be described as an emotional vampire who he had a relationship with at university. An uncomfortable story with some disturbing ideas behind it.

The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror

It's mammlth good character study and well-written, a very "internal" story, but of course things go disastrously wrong the ending was a little too open-ended for my taste and another one about an elderly man who gets off on an abandoned train station. There's a nice subtle theme about the soldier's dedication to his duty, but I still enjoyed reading it very mammotj, despite the personal destruction it may wre. There were two stories by Ramse.

Like all collections, some really not so good ones, mysterious and damaged unconscious of a mentally unstable person that is inexplicable to anyone but the killer themselves. Silverberg is a well established novelist and short story writer although usually known for his work in the science fiction and fantasy genre. Error rating book!

    For the first few paragraphs I rebelled a bit against the folksiness of this tale, but soon fell into the rhythms and pace. Refresh and try again. This story had me gripped from the very first sentence? Some packed a bigger punch than others but this is a good selection kf horror stories.✋

    There are pieces written by well known horror writers and also some less horgor newcomers and sets out to showcase the best in contemporary horror.
